Australian all-rounder Moises Henriques has lifted the lid on his longstanding battle with mental health by sharing a deep, emotional message on social media, related to the mental health issues. He also further opined on the deceptive nature of social media, which appears bright on the outside but can be highly pretentious from within.
Henriques has been a seasoned campaigner for Cricket Australia for over a decade, having featured largely for hometown side New South Wales along with the national team and Big Bash champions Sydney Sixers. The 33-year-old has also earned four Test caps, and 11 ODI and T20I caps, each. For his service at the international level, he has 404 runs and 13 wickets to his credit.
Henriques, who recently became a father following the birth of his five-weeks old baby Archie, has been quarreling with mental illness for years now. He made notice of the same to Cricket Australia when he opted to stay away from the game for a couple of weeks back in 2017.
And now, the long-time NSW servant took to social media to explain his perspective and personal struggle with mental health, shortly after stepping down as captain of the Blues.
He wrote:
“I was going through my Instagram and noticed that it’s a highlight reel of smiles, laughs, good times and happy families. Whilst things may appear all smiles and good times it definitely is not like that all the time.”
“In the last five weeks I’ve felt like shedding as many tears as our baby Archie. Feeling overwhelmed, anxious and worried. Just a reminder of the misleading representation social media can portray of our not so perfect lives. Mental health is always a work in progress.”
Henriques, with 453 runs in six matches this season for NSW, is presently preparing to face Victoria at the SCG on February 14.
