NZ vs IND 1st Test: Miscommunication With Rahane Leads To Pant’s Run-Out

NZ vs IND Miscommunication With Rahane Leads To Pant's Run-out

India started the day 2 of the 1st Test against New Zealand from 122/5 and it was on Ajinkya Rahane and Rishabh Pant to take India to a respectable score. Ajinkya Rahane and Rishabh Pant both were looking good, batting carefully. Rishabh Pant was not looking to go big this time, except for the one six he hit on the bowling of spinner Ajaz Patel. In spite of the cautious approach, Pant’s bad luck made sure he fails to score a big score, as he was run-out due to a slight miscommunication between him and Rahane while taking a single.

Ajinkya Rahane was at the time playing on 39 runs from 125 balls and Rishabh Pant was playing on 19 runs from 53 balls when this mishap happened. Tim Southee bowled a slightly short length delivery, pitching outside the off stump line and then going away from the batsman. Rahane watched the ball and gently hit the ball toward the gully region. The thing to be noted here is that the gully region was covered by Ajaz Patel who is not that good a fielder.

Rahane clearly saw the run and started running as soon as he hit the ball. He did not check if Pant has accepted the call. He looked at Pant when he got halfway into the pitch. Pant was still looking unsure and looked almost frozen, thinking whether it is a sensible decision to take a run on this. But seems he realized Rahane’s wicket was more important and then decided to complete the run which had now become a risky run.

But by then it was too late. Ajaz Patel had already picked the ball. The throw was not good. He ideally should have thrown the ball to the wicket-keeper BJ Watling but he threw the ball directly but rather slowly towards the stumps.

BJ Watling ran fast from his wicket-keeping position to the stumps to collect the ball. Fortunately, the ball managed to hit the upper part of the stumps and Pant headed directly towards the dressing room run-out and disappointed with his bad luck and the miscommunication.

We cannot say whether it was Rahane’s fault or Pant’s fault. No doubt, a run was there. But Ajinkya Rahane should have confirmed that Pant was running too. On the other hand, Rishabh Pant should have trusted the vice-captain’s call and completed the run.

Pant got out on 19 runs from 53 balls (1 four, 1 six) while Ajinkya Rahane added only 7 runs to his score after the incident. He got out on the bowling of Tim Southee, as he decided to leave the wide-ish ball last minute. The ball took the inside edge of the leaving bat and went into the hands of the keeper. Rahane made 46 runs from 138 balls (5 fours)

Thanks to Mohammed Shami’s inning of 21 runs from 20 balls (3 fours), India managed to take the score to 165 at the end of the 1st innings. Ravichandran Ashwin was out on a golden duck, as Tim Southee clean bowled him, in a fashion similar to that of the wicket he took of Prithvi Shaw yesterday. Ishant Sharma added 5 runs from 23 balls to the scoreboard before he edged the Kyle Jamieson bouncer to the wicketkeeper BJ Watling.

Kyle Jamieson and Tim Southee both took 4 wickets each and one was taken by Trent Boult.
