Rohit Sharma is the Indian opening batsman who is known for his elegantly hit big shots and for his big daddy hundreds.
Born on 30 April 1987 in Nagpur, Maharashtra, Rohit plays for Mumbai in domestic cricket.
Rohit Sharma started as an off-spinner but soon his school coach Dinesh Lad recognized his batting talent and changed his batting position from No.8 to an opener.
This 5-feet 8-inch tall charismatic batsman wears jersey no. 45 and is nicknamed ‘Hitman’ or ‘Ro’.
Rohit Sharma ODI Career Highlights
Rohit made his ODI debut for India against Ireland on 23 June 2007 in Belfast in which he did not get the chance to bat as India won by 9 wickets. He used to bat in the lower order batting position in those days. In his next match against SA in Ireland, he scored 8 runs.
He scored his first half-century (52 runs) against Pakistan in his 4th match at Jaipur.
The man whom we now know for hitting big hundreds quite consistently had to wait for years since his debut to score his 1st hundred.
He scored his 1st hundred (114 runs), playing at No. 4 position, against Zimbabwe at Bulawayo on 28 May 2010. Unfortunately, India had lost this match, as Zimbabwe chased down the target of 286 runs in 48.2 overs with 6 wickets remaining. Suresh Raina was the captain for the match.
He has so far scored three double-hundreds in the ODIs.
His first double hundred came against Australia on November 2, 2013, at Bangaluru, in which he scored 209 runs from 158 balls, hitting 12 fours and 16 sixes. India had won that match by 57 runs. MS Dhoni was the captain of Team India.
He scored his second double hundred against Sri Lanka on November 13, 2014, at Kolkata. Thanks to opener Rohit Sharma’s record-breaking 264 runs from 173 balls, hitting 33 fours and 9 sixes, Team India put a huge total of 404/5 in the 1st innings. Sri Lanka had got all-out on 251 runs and Virat Kohli-led India had won that match by 153 runs.
Rohit Sharma made his third double-ton again against Sri Lanka on December 13, 2017, at Mohali. Batting first, India made 392/4 with opener Rohit Sharma scoring not-out 208 runs from 153 balls, hitting 134 fours and 12 sixes. Sri Lanka managed only 251/8 in 50 overs and Rohit Sharma-led India won that match by 141 runs.
Rohit Sharma T20I Career highlights
Rohit Sharma made his T20I debut on 19 September 2007 vs England in the 1st ever ICC T20 World Cup in 2007 at Durban. He did not bat in that match.
But in his next match, he scored not-out 50* runs from 40 balls against South Africa, batting at No. 5 position. MS Dhoni-led India had won that match by 37 runs.
Sharma scored his first T20I hundred against South Africa on October 2, 2015, at Dharamsala. He opened the innings and scored 106 runs from 66 balls, hitting 12 fours and 5 sixes. MS Dhoni-led India, however, had lost that match, as South Africa successfully chased the target of 200 runs in 19.4 overs, losing only three wickets.
Rohit Sharma Test Career highlights
Rohit Sharma had to wait for 5 years after his ODI debut to make his Test Debut. He made his Test debut on 6 November 2013 against West Indies at Eden Gardens. It was the farewell series of Sachin Tendulkar. He had a fantastic Test debut as he scored 177 runs from 301 balls, hitting 23 fours and 1 six, batting at No. 6 spot. MS Dhoni-led India had won that match by an innings and 51 runs.
Rohit continued his good form and hit another hundred in the 2nd and final Test of the series, scoring 111* runs from 127 balls, hitting 11 fours and 3 sixes. India had won that match by an innings and 126 runs. He had won the player of the series award.
However, after that dream-start to his Test career, he struggled to score big in Test for the next many years. He even lost his place in the Test team due to his lackluster performance in most matches.
But he made a great comeback in the Test format towards the end of 2019 as he scored big in the home Test series against South Africa.
In the 1st Test, he scored 176 runs from 244 balls, hitting 23 fours and 6 sixes in the 1st innings, and 127 runs from 149 balls, hitting 10 fours and 7 sixes in the second innings. Kohli-led India won this Test by 203 runs.
In the 3rd and final Test of the series, he scored his 1st Test double hundred in the 1st inning, scoring 212 runs from 255 balls, hitting 28 fours and 6 sixes. India had won that match by an innings and 202 runs.
Hitman, as he is called, is a truly world-class player and has millions of fans all around the world.
He is the current vice-captain of Team India and has also led India in many series wins in T20I and ODI formats.
He is the captain of Mumbai Indias in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Under his captainship, Mumbai Indians have won the IPL Trophy for record 4 times (2013, 2015, 2017, & 2019), beating CSK three times in the final and beating Rising Pune Supergiants one time in 2017 final.
Such a class player and leader deserves many awards and has rightly won many. He won the Arjuna award from the Government of India in 2015. He also won the ICC ODI Player of the Year 2019 award.
