Australia inflicted a heavy defeat on their Trans-Tasman rivals, as New Zealand lost the first test match of the three-match Test series by 296 runs at the Perth Cricket Stadium (Optus Stadium). The series is a part of the World Test Championship. Mitchell Starc won the man of the match award for his 5/52 in the 1st inning and 4/45 in the 2nd innings.

The Kiwis struggled from the start itself as they lost opener, Jeet Raval, for 1. Also, captain Williamson failed to notch a big score for his side. The 3rd wicket partnership between Latham and Ross Taylor lasted for 36 runs but both the players were dismissed in successive overs by Starc and Lyon respectively. The duo picked 4 wickets each in the innings as New Zealand were bowled out for 171 in their second innings.

“It was a pretty solid performance considering we were a bowler down for two innings and not having an all-rounder in our side,” Australia captain Tim Paine told reporters. “Really rapt with that performance particularly from our bowlers.”

The Aussies lost a pacer in Josh Hazlewood while the Kiwis lost Lockie Ferguson due to injury.

BJ Watling and Henry Nicholls managed a partnership of 41 while Colin de Grandhomme and Watling scored 56 but the Kiwis failed to register a big partnership. Pat Cummins dismissed Grandhomme while Mitchell Starc scalped BJ Watling in the next over.

Their quest of taking it to the final day also wasn’t successful as the Australian side took the 1-nil lead. Now the two teams will play on the 26th of December in the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
