Bowlers to Take a Hat-trick in Caribbean Premier League (CPL)

October 6, 2019 By Vipul B Leave a Comment

2. Andre Russell

Andre Russell became the second bowler to take a hat-trick in Caribbean Premier League (CPL).

This was a memorable match for all the T20 fans. And the performance of Andre Russell in this match was absolutely heroic.

He not only took a hat-trick but also later scored the fastest hundred of the CPL. Yes, both in the same match!

He walked many miles extra for his team as an all-rounder and as a captain, in that match. And what more, he helped his side win in what was a record chase.

Such was his impact in this match that even the opposing team fans, members, and management team applauded him whole-heartedly for his super-hero performance. Certainly, he produced an absolute spectacle on August 10, 2018. Let us here only focus on his hat-trick.

Andre Russell hat-trick in CPL(Caribbean Premier League) 2018

Andre Russell’s three wickets which formed the Hat-trick (in detail):

Jamaica Tallawahs captain Andre Russell won the toss and decided to field first. But soon he realized it was a bad decision.

Batting first, Trinbago Knight Riders batsmen Chris Lynn 46 runs (27 balls), Colin Munro 61 runs (42 balls), Brendon McCullum 56 runs (27 balls), and Darren Bravo 29 runs(16 balls) hit the Tallawahs bowlers, all around the Queen’s Park Oval ground in Trinidad.

And now it was time for the final over. After 19 overs, TKR has already piled up 212 runs losing only three wickets.

1st Wicket: Brendon McCullum – 56 runs (27 balls)

Andre Russell decided to take the final over himself. Right-hand batsman Brendon McCullum was on strike, while left-handed Darren Bravo was at the non-striker’s end.

On the first ball, Brendon McCullum hit him for four and TKR reached 216/3. Russell was under pressure.

He came running in and bowled a full-toss delivery which will be considered a taboo at that stage of the match. But luck was on Russell’s side from that moment on.

Brendon McCullum failed to connect the ball properly.

The ball hit the outside edge of the bat and went up very high in the air, towards the long-on region. Rovman Powell took the catch. And McCullum’s brilliant knock came to an end.

Trinbago Knight Riders scoreboard read 216/4.

2nd Wicket: Darren Bravo – 29 runs (16 balls)

Now it was time for left-handed Darren Bravo to face Russell. Bravo had managed to change the strike during the earlier dismissal.

This time Andre Russell bowled a fuller delivery outside the off-stump line.

Bravo decided to hit a powerful cover drive, but the ball hit the inside edge of the bat and thus he dragged the ball onto the stumps.

Darren Bravo was out and Russell had taken two in two.

The Knight Riders fell to 216/5 in 19.3 overs and Andre Russell was on a hat-trick!

3rd Wicket: Denesh Ramdin – 0 (1 ball)

The next batman was right-handed Denesh Ramdin. It was the final over, so he had to hit a big shot.

Russell, this time bowled a short ball, which Denesh Ramdin pulled but could not connect properly. Thus, the ball went straight into the hands of Andre McCarthy who was standing in the deep mid-wicket region.

Andre Russell completed the hat-trick! Russell looked up in the sky, with both hands raised, doing a Victory pose.

As teammates rushed to him for congratulating, he was smiling full and wide with a little surprise on his face. It seemed he just wanted to give minimum runs but got a hat-trick in the process.

And that was how Russell took the second hat-trick of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL).

Match outcome

At the end of that over, TKR made 223 runs. It was the highest total of the CPL. But only for a short while. As Jamaica Tallawahs successfully chased and created a new record.

Andre Russell shined brightly during the chase too.

Jamaica Tallawahs had a bad start, as Trinbago Knight Rider star from the USA, Ali Khan took three early wickets and the Tallawahs were reduced to 15/3.

When Andre Russell came to bat, he had total luck on his side. The first shot he hit got dropped by Ali Khan, and from that point on, Russell turned the tide single-handedly and went on to score 40-ball hundred. Fastest hundred of the CPL.

He helped Jamaica Tallawahs win the match by 4 wickets and three balls remaining. Apart from the hat-trick, he scored 121 runs from just 49 balls hitting 13 sixes and 6 fours.

It was the third match of CPL 2018 and the first one for Jamaica Tallawahs. Clearly, it was a dream start for them.

CPL 2018 outcome

Jamaica Tallawahs managed to reach the Eliminator match of CPL 2018. But they lost against St Kitts and Nevis Patriots in that match by 2 wickets and 1 ball remaining. Trinbago Knight Riders had won the CPL 2018.
