Cricket South Africa has appointed former captain Graeme Smith to be CSA director. He will work as the CSA director for three months.  After three months, he has other IPL commitments.

Cricket South Africa was under a lot of controversies over the last few months. It is a difficult time for South African cricket. And Graeme Smith is given the important responsibility of re-instating the order and smoothness in the same.

On 6 December, the CSA Board of Directors had suspended their CEO Thabang Moroe. There were reports of misconduct by him, as reported by the Social and Ethics Committee and the Audit and Risk Committee of the Board.

Immediately, the next day, Northerns and Titans chief executive Jacques Faul was appointed as the acting CEO of Cricket South Africa (CSA).

At the end of August, CSA had started talks with Graeme Smith on the role. But last month, Smith had withdrawn his candidacy for the role of director, stating that the process was a long and frustrating one. Also, there are reports that he had put the condition that Thabang Moroe is removed from the role of the chief executive.

38-year old Graeme Smith played for South Africa from 2002 to 2014. And is one of the most successful captains in the world. His leadership will surely help CSA in the current tough times.

As per the site Sport24, CSA Acting Chief Executive, Jacques Faul, said: “I am delighted that Graeme has agreed to assist Cricket South Africa up until the IPL next year. Obviously, Graeme has had his concerns during the course of the last few months, but I am pleased to say that we have overcome those concerns and I look forward to working with him to urgently address pressing cricketing matters in particular”.

The next big series for Graeme Smith to focus on will be the England tour of South Africa four-match Test series which will start on December 26, 2019. He will also have responsibilities related to women’s and junior level cricket.
