As we know Cricket is spreading its roots in Europe. Another bunch of roots is already going deeper into Canada. Yes, Global T20 League is back with its second season, which will begin on 25th July 2019. In this article, we will take a quick re-look at the 2018 GT20 League points table, top performers (most catches, most runs, and most wickets), playoff results, and final match results summary.

GT20 League in Canada is a great chance for the cricket fans in North America to witness some of the top cricket stars in action. It will give the local cricket players a platform to display their talent on the global level and also a chance to learn from the top international players.  Great to see that ICC is taking stronger steps in making cricket a truly global sport. Cricket truly deserves to be played all over the world. It is all about entertainment, skills, temperament, tactics, thrill and much more.

2019 Global T20 League is perfectly sandwiched between the World Cup 2019, which will end on July 14, 2019, and Euro T20 Slam which will begin on August 30, 2019. GT20 league will begin on July 25, 2019, and will end on August 11, 2019.

Marquee Players from the 2018 Season of GT20 League

Last year, we saw major international players such as Chris Gayle, Steve Smith, David Warner, Darren Sammy, Andre Russell, Sunil Narine, Lasith Malinga, David Miller, Chris Lynn, Shahid Afridi, and Dwayne Bravo in the Global T20 League. We also saw Sheldon Cottrell with his salute celebrations, Rassie van der Dussen, Sherfane Rutherford, USA’s Ali Khan, and many others.

2018 GT20 League Teams

Following six teams participated in the last season of the GT20 league:

  1. Vancouver Knights
  2. Montreal Tigers
  3. Winnipeg Hawks
  4. Edmonton Royals
  5. Cricket West Indies B
  6. Toronto Nationals

Last Season’s winners

Chris Gayle-led Vancouver Knights won the GT20 League 2018 Championship. Local player Saad Bin Zafar garnered headlines for his all-round performance in the final and winning the player of the match award.  Zafar first took 2 wickets of the West Indies B Team and conceded only 26 runs in the 4 overs he bowled. He later helped the team with his scintillating knock of 79 runs from just 48 balls. Quick results summary of the final is given later in the article.

Below table shows the points garnered by the teams in the league stage of the tournament. Out of the 6 teams, top 4 teams played the playoffs.

2018 GT20 League Playoff Results

Here are the results of the playoff matches in the tournament. Vancouver Knights had to face a loss against Cricket West Indies B in the Qualifier-1. But later they won the Qualifier-2 against Winnipeg Hawks and again decided to challenge Cricket West Indies B team. This time, Vancouver Knights took revenge and won the final match quite comfortably. And so the Knights were crowned as the first Global T20 League champions.

Most Runs in the GT20 League 2018

Below table shows the list of top run-scoring batsmen in the GT20 tournament in 2018.  Lendl Simmons from Winnipeg Hawks leads the table with 321 runs in 8 matches at a great SR of 140.78. He is followed by Vancouver Knights’ Rassie van der Dussen (255 runs in 8 matches) and Cricket West Indies B team’s Sherfane Rutherford (230 runs in 8 matches).

Most Wickets in the GT20 League 2018

As you can see in the below showing the top wicket-takers in Gt20 League 2018, Sheldon Cottrell from Vancouver Knights was the leading wicket-taker in the tournament with 16 wickets in 8 matches. His teammate Fawad Ahmed (14 wickets in 8 matches) and Montreal Tigers’ Lasith Malinga (13 wickets in 6 matches) follow Cottrell on the list.

Most Catches in the GT20 League 2018

Fabian Allen from Cricket West Indies B leads the most catches in GT20 League 2018 chart with 10 catches in 8 matches. He is followed by Vancouver Knights’ Rassie van der Dussen (8 catches in 8 matches) and Winnipeg Hawks’ David Warner (7 catches in 8 matches).

2018 GT20 League Final Match Results Summary

The final match saw a great team effort from Vancouver Knights. Sheldon Cottrell took 4 wickets giving only 29 runs. Fawad Ahmed took a 3-fer and as discussed above Saad Bin Zafar took 2/26. There was no major batting performance from Cricket West Indies B, except the one by Fabian Allen. He scored a quick-fire 41 runs from 23 balls.

Vancouver Knights’ Rassie van der Dussen and Saad Bin Zafar batted really well and helped the team reach the target in just 17.3 overs. Below is the quick results summary from the match.

So that was the quick re-look at the GT20 league 2018. After the success of the tournament last year, this year fans expect to see a bigger tournament, with many more reputed stars from all over the world and more quality and entertaining cricket. This year is the most wonderful year for all cricket fans. We have many T20 cricket leagues like IPL, CPL, BBL, T20 Blast. And now we also have the newer leagues like Euro Slam and GT20 League Canada. All this and add to that the mega event, the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019. Definitely one of the most happening cricket year so far!
