Isn’t it great that cricket fans always have some ICC tournament or the other to get excited and look forward to? Recently, we had the ODI World Cup with the most epic final and now all eyes are set on the ICC T20 World Cup 2020. It is always good to know the history of the tournament and hope this article will help a little in this objective.

All Past ICC T20 World Cup Winners
Below table shows the winners of all the past six editions of the ICC T20 World Cup with runners-up and venues:

As you can see, Team West Indies have won the T20 World Cup twice.
England, India, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan all have won the World Cup once each.
Bangladesh, South Africa, New Zealand, and the 5 times ODI World Cup champions, Australia, have not won the T20 World Cup yet.

All ICC T20 World Cups Final Match Summaries (2007-2016)
Let us the gripping summaries of the final matches of each of the six ICC T20 World cups from the year 2007 to the year 2016.
2007 ICC World T20 (11 – 24 September 2007)
The first edition of the ICC World T20 was hosted by South Africa. India had won this world cup under the new captain MS Dhoni, by defeating Pakistan by 5 runs in the final at the Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg.
Semifinals:
1) New Zealand vs Pakistan (Pakistan won by 6 wickets)
2) India vs Australia (India won by 15 runs)
2007 World T20 Final Match Summary:
The first edition of the ICC World T20 was hosted by South Africa. India had won this world cup under the new captain MS Dhoni, by defeating Pakistan by 5 runs in the final, at the Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg.
This was an exciting and thrilling world cup for Indian fans, as it was in this world cup that India beat Pakistan twice, first in a group stage tie match which resulted in a bowl-out and second in this nail-biting final.
Also, this world cup was memorable as we saw Yuvraj Singh hitting six 6s in one over and doing the almost impossible feat against England.
In the final, MS Dhoni won the toss and decided to bat first. India had a good start, with Yousuf Pathan hitting a six and a four in first few overs. It was his debut match. Gautam Gambhir was in great touch and in a wonderful zone. He was timing the ball pitch-perfect and his running between the wickets was quick and energetic. It was a sight to watch Gambhir bat in this match! However, he was the lone warrior in this match.
Umar Gul sent both Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni back to pavilion with his fiery pace bowling. Gautam Gambhir played some beautiful shots all around the ground before getting out on 75 runs (54 balls) to Umar Gul.
By the way, Umar Gul was the leading wicket-taker in this World Cup and the next T20 World Cup too. It was the rising star Rohit Sharma who scored a quickfire 30* from 16 in the last few overs and helped India reach 157/5 in 20 overs.
In reply, Pakistan had a bad start as Mohd. Hafeez got out on 1 on the bowling of RP Singh and Pakistan scoreboard was 2/1. Soon RP Singh clean bowled Kamran Akmal on a duck and Pakistan sank to 26/2. But later in the match, Younis Khan stabilized the inning and Misbah-ul-Haq towards the end brought the match back to life for Pakistan.
At one point, Pakistan needed 53 runs from 23 balls. But it was the over of Harbhajan Singh in which Misbah hit three 6s and then followed by another expensive over by S Sreesanth, Pakistan took the equation to 20 runs from 12 balls. RP Singh bowled the second last over, giving 7 runs.
And finally, in the last over, Pakistan needed 13 runs from 6 balls with only one wicket remaining. It was a tense moment for all fans, more so for the Indians fans, as Joginder Sharma, started the last over with a ‘big’ wide. It was followed by a dot ball and then Misbah hit a six.
Now Pakistan needed 6 runs from 4 balls. Next, Misbah tries to scoop the ball to the leg-side but gives a catch to S Sreesanth and India won the final by 5 runs.

2009 ICC World T20 (5 – 21 June 2009)
The second edition of the ICC World T20 was hosted by England. The previous year’s runner-up, Pakistan, had once again reached the final. This time they won the final against Sri Lanka by 8 wickets.
Semifinals:
- Pakistan vs South Africa (Pakistan won by 7 runs)
- Sri Lanka vs West Indies (Sri Lanka won by 57 runs)
2009 World T20 Final Match Summary:
Sri Lanka won the toss and decided to bat first. They had a very bad start, as all their star players who had been impressive so far in the tournament, could not play big innings in the final.
Leading run-scorer of the tournament Tillakratane Dilshan got out on zero, dangerous Sanath Jayasuriya got out on 17(10), Jehan Mubarak got out on zero and Mahela Jayawardene managed only 1(4). And the Sri Lankan scoreboard showed 32/4.
But thanks to Kumar Sangakkara who scored 64*(52) and Angelo Mathews who scored 35*(24), Sri Lanka reached a fighting total of 138/6 in 20 overs.
In reply, Pakistan was clinical and achieved the target in just 18.4 overs and losing only two wickets. Their win was powered by opener Kamran Akmal’s 37(28), Shahid Afridi’s 54*(40) and Shoaib Malik’s 24* (22).
Thus Pakistan became the 2009 ICC World T20 Champions!

2010 ICC World T20 (30 April – 16 May 2010)
The third edition of the ICC T20 World Cup was hosted by the West Indies island nations. England won their first World Cup by beating Australia in the final by 7 wickets.
Semifinals:
- Sri Lanka vs England (England won by 7 wickets)
- Pakistan vs Australia (Australia won by 3 wickets)
2010 World T20 Final Match Summary:
In this final match, England won the toss and decided to bowl first.
Australia had a bad start with Shane Watson, David Warner, and Brad Haddin all returning to the dressing room in no time. The Australian scoreboard read 8/3.
However, captain Micheal Clarke with his 27 from 27 and David Hussey with his 59 from 54 saved the sinking ship. Finally, Cameron White came to the party with his short but impactful knock of 30 runs from 19 balls. At the end of 20 overs, Australia reached a score of 147/6.
In reply, England lost their first wicket on 7 runs. But from that point, England did not turn back and opener Craig Kieswetter with his match-winning knock of 63 runs from 49 balls and Kevin Pietersen with his 47 runs from 31 balls took England very close to England’s first Cricket World Cup win.
In the end, Eoin Morgan with his 15 from 13 and captain Paul Collingwood with his one six and one four sealed the win for England. Thus, England won by 7 wickets and became the 2010 ICC World T20 champions.

2012 ICC World T20 (18 September- 7 October 2012)
The fourth edition of the ICC T20 World Cup was hosted by Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka managed to reach the final for the second time but once again lost. West Indies won the T20 World cup final by 36 runs.
Semifinals:
- Sri Lanka vs Pakistan (Sri Lanka won by 16 runs)
- West Indies vs Australia (West Indies won by 74 runs)
2012 World T20 Final Match Summary:
It was the second T20 World Cup final for Sri Lanka. This one also, they lost.
West Indies won the toss and decided to bat first. But little did they know that Ajantha Mendis was waiting to create panic for the West Indies batsmen. Both West Indies openers Johnson Charles and dangerous Chris Gayle got out early and West Indies scoreboard read 14/2 in 5.5 overs.
On one side, big hitters like Chris Gayle, Dwayne Bravo, Kieron Pollard, and Andre Russell were all falling prey to the spin of Ajantha Mendis, while on the other side the absolutely fantastic Marlon Samuels and captain Daren Sammy were giving a ceaseless fight. Marlon Samuels scored a huge game-changing knock of 78 from 56 before getting out to Akila Dananjaya. Daren Sammy stayed not-out on 26 runs from 15 balls. West Indies made 137/6 in 20 overs.
In reply, Sri Lanka had a slow start and this slow start later put pressure on the lower order which led to the collapse of the Sri Lankan innings.
And Sri Lanka got all out on 101 runs in just 18.4 overs and West Indies won the final by 36 runs. Thus West Indies became the 2012 ICC World T20 champions and it also turned out to be a memorable birthday for DJ Bravo! Everyone was doing the Gangnam Style dance moves. It was a historic day for West Indies cricket!

2014 ICC World T20 (16 March–6 April 2014)
The fifth edition of the ICC T20 World Cup was hosted by Bangladesh. Sri Lanka had once again reached the final and this time they managed to beat India by 6 wickets and won their first ICC World T20 title.
Semifinals:
- Sri Lanka vs West Indies (Sri Lanka won by 27 runs (D/L method) )
- South Africa vs India (India won by 6 wickets)
2014 World T20 Final Match Summary:
Sri Lanka became the first team to reach the T20 World Cup final for the third time. And this time, they were lucky and won the T20 world cup for the first time.
Sri Lanka won the toss and decided to bowl first. For the most part of the match, India looked pretty much in control, as opener Rohit Sharma with his 29 runs and 26 balls and Virat Kohli with his 77 runs from 58 balls gave a solid start to the innings. But India could not finish well and was very slow towards the end.
India did not lose many wickets but managed only 130/4 in 20 overs.
In reply, Sri Lanka achieved the target quite comfortably in just 17.5 overs and losing only 4 wickets. Mahela Jayawardene with his 24 from 24 and Kumar Sangakkara with his not out 52 from 35 made sure Sri Lanka will win the match with ease. Finally, Thisara Perera came and smashed a not-out 23 from 14 and Sri Lanka won by 6 wickets with 13 balls remaining.
Sri Lanka had lost 5 World Cup finals before this match and this win meant a lot for the Sri Lankan fans. Sri Lanka was finally on top of the world again.

2016 ICC World T20 (8 March–3 April 2016)
The sixth edition of the ICC T20 World cup was hosted by India. The world cup saw a thrilling final between West Indies and England, which was won by West Indies.
Semifinals:
- New Zealand vs England (England won by 7 wickets)
- India vs West Indies (West Indies won by 7 wickets with two balls remaining)
2016 World T20 Final Match Summary:
Both England and the West Indies had reached their second T20 world cup finals. But it was West Indies who won the match and became the first team to win the ICC T20 World Cup twice.
West Indies had a bad start in this World Cup, as they had lost to Afghanistan in the group stage, but they recovered well from that setback and produced some phenomenal performances in the rest of the World Cup.
In the final, West Indies won the toss and asked England to bat first. England failed to start well and the English scoreboard read 23/3 in 4.4 overs. But once again, it was the genius batsman, Joe Root, who came to England’s rescue and played an important knock of 54 runs from 36 balls. He was well supported by wicket-keeper batsman Jos Butler, who went on to 36 runs from 22 balls. But later once again England batting collapsed as Carlos Brathwaite and Bravo bowled quite well towards the end. England managed to reach a total of 155/9 in 20 overs.
In reply, West Indies had to face a nightmare. Both their openers Johnson Charles and Chris Gayle were gone early for 1 run and 4 runs respectively. Lendl Simmons too got out on a duck. West Indies scoreboard read 11/3 in 2.3 overs.
But things were about to take a turn, as 2012 ICC World T20 final hero Marlon Samuels once again played a phenomenal match-winning knock of not-out 85 runs from 66 balls. He found a quite reliable batting partner in Dwayne Bravo who scored 25 runs from 27 balls and protected the other end.
It was the final over of the match, which sent new ripples in the cricket’s chase history. West Indies needed 19 runs from 6 balls. Ben Stokes was given charge of the ball.
Big man Carlos Brathwaite who had already taken 3 wickets for 23 runs while bowling, now needed to contribute with the bat too.
Carlos Brathwaite hit four consecutive sixes, on the first four balls of the over and send waves of thrill and surprise all over the stadium! Ben stokes was down on his knees still trying to understand what had actually happened.
The crowd was jumping and screaming with excitement. West Indies had won this epic final by 4 wickets with 2 balls remaining.
All West Indies players and fans were dancing on the song ‘Champion! Champion!’ by DJ Bravo. The atmosphere was like none other. Daren Sammy had led West Indies to their second T20 World Cup and Marlon Samuels was the man of the match in a T20 World Cup final once again! Another historic and memorable day for the West Indian fans!

Player of the series: Virat Kohli (India) for his total 273 runs at an average of 136.50
Most runs: Tamim Iqbal (Bangladesh) – 295 runs
