The series between India and West Indies, slated to begin from tomorrow with the first of three T20I at Hyderabad, is set to have the front-foot no-ball conundrum exclusively monitored and supervised by the third umpires.

While the on-field umpire holds the benefit of the doubt with his calls, the third umpire is deployed to scan and keep tabs on every controversial or wicket-taking delivery.

Cricket and technology have walked on a parallel path in recent years, with a substantial advancements been made in order to ameliorate video quality, accuracy and reliability within the game’s ethics and codes.

From the SpiderCams to the zing bails, the gentlemen’s game has come a mighty long way. Most significantly, this testing of the third umpire for the front-foot no-ball was done back in the ODI series between England and Pakistan in 2016. Various reports have also suggested that the highly celebrated Indian Premier League, where ties and encounters are defined and derived by the finest of margins, is looking to install an extra TV Umpire for regulation of no-balls.

The ICC, announcing on Thursday, stated:

“If there has been an infringement on the front foot, the third umpire will communicate this to the on-field umpire who will subsequently call a no-ball. As a result, the on-field umpire will not call a front-foot no-ball without the advice of the third umpire.”

Making it extremely clear and direct, the ICC added that in care of discrepancies where even the eagle-eyed technology fails to decipher a no-ball’s occurrence, the benefit of the doubt will be given to the bowler.

Adding on the same in their official statement, they affirmed, “It’s important to note that any benefit of the doubt lies with the bowler, and if a late no-ball call is communicated, then the on-field umpire will rescind (cancel) a dismissal (if applicable) and call no-ball.”

The purpose, as aforementioned, was made clear.

“The outcomes of the trial will be used to gauge whether the system has a beneficial impact on the accuracy of no-ball decisions and whether it can be implemented while minimizing disruption to the flow of the game,” cricket’s premier council concluded.

India versus West Indies is scheduled to take place tomorrow, December 6, at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium.
