South Africa Slated To Host 2022 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup

March 4, 2020 By Akarshak Roy Leave a Comment

South Africa slated to host 2022 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup

Cricket’s governing body, the International Cricket Council (ICC), has declared that South Africa will play host in the forthcoming Women’s World Cup 2022, confirming the same on their official Twitter handle earlier today.

Hosts South Africa presently pitted in sixth place in the ICC Women’s team rankings in the present format, will qualify for the marquee event regardless of their position. Meanwhile, for the rest of the cricketing globe, only the top seven ranked nations will buy their tickets to the Rainbow Nation. This mode of automatic qualification is set at the confirmation date of November 30, 2021. The final two teams are to be confirmed following a qualification round.

At the time of writing, Australia leads the rankings chart with 9,533 points, a whopping 654 points ahead of second-placed England. Team India have over 10,000 points but have collected the same in 41 matches as to Australia’s 33.

The sub-continent, Australia and New Zealand, West Indies and of course, the home of cricket – England – have all hosted numerous tournaments in the last decade or more, while South Africa hasn’t done so since the inaugural men’s tournament in 2007.

In what played out as a spectacle both on and off the field, a then-young MS Dhoni’s troops set out a massive statement of intent by clinching the first-ever T20 World Cup. And now, the beautiful landscapes of the Newlands and Johannesburg are set to witness breathtaking cricket once again.

Presently in the ongoing T20 World Cup, South Africa and Australia are scheduled to face-off against each other in the second semi-final, just after the India-England encounter. The Aussies won all of their group stages matches, finishing a couple of points ahead of Harmanpreet Kaur’s women. SA, on the contrary, finished with three victories and a rain-truncated result.

Both the semi-finals will take place on March 5, at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
