Team India Squad Announced for U-19 ODI World Cup 2020

U-19 ODI World Cup 2020 Team India Squads Annouced

On Sunday, BCCI Junior Selection Committee announced the 15-member squad for the U-19 ODI World Cup. The World Cup will take place in South Africa from 17th January 2020 to 9th February 2020. The committee named Uttar Pradesh batsman Priyam Garg as the captain of the U-19 World Cup Team. Also, his state teammate Dhruv Jurel (wicketkeeper) will play as Garg’s deputy.

Young sensation Yashaswi  Jaiswal, who made the headlines by becoming youngest ever double centurion in List A cricket, is also in the squad. Left-arm spinner Atharva Ankolekar, known for his Man of the Match performance in Asia Cup Final, is also there. Overall there was a big pool of players available to select from. Under the guidance of Rahul Dravid, India followed the idea of giving a chance to as many players as possible without worrying much about team results.

Recently in an interview with ESPNCricinfo Rahul Dravid told, “At the start of the cycle, I tell a lot of these guys who are pushing for spots: We’ll give you enough opportunities to put your hand up and select yourself. And honestly, hand on heart, at least 40-45 boys can say, ‘Hey, we got a chance. We got opportunities.’”

Since the last edition of the U-19 World Cup, India played 24 One Day games & in those games, they tried a total of 53 players. None of the players played all the games. Yashaswi Jaiswal leads the chart with 15 games. And in fact, only 3 players were part of more than 10 games.

While skipper Priyam Garg is the most experienced in terms of senior-level cricket with already 12 first-class, 15 List A & 11 T20 games in his name, others the likes of Yashswi, Tilak Verma, Ravi Bishnoi, Karthik Tyagi also settling in their state limited-overs side.

These days first names which one notice in any India’s squad are the pacers. Akash Singh, Kartik Tyagi, Sushant Mishra, Vidyadhar Patil will take charge of the pace bowling attack. Mizoram player  Divyansh Joshi also has been given a go with only two games in his name.  It will be interesting to see if they replicate the success of Mavi, Nagarkoti, and Porel.

Left-arm spinner Atharva Ankolekar will lead the spin department along with Hegde and leg spinner Ravi Bishnoi in the side.  As far as unlucky one is concerned- Rajasthan’s left-arm spinner Manav Suthar missed out, despite his ‘Man of the series’ performance in recently finished series against Afghanistan.

Team India Squad for U-19 ODI World Cup 2020:

Yashasvi Jaiswal, Tilak Varma, Divyaansh Saxena, Priyam Garg (C), Dhruv Chand Jurel (VC & WK), Shashwat Rawat, Divyansh Joshi, Shubhang Hegde, Ravi Bishnoi, Akash Singh, Kartik Tyagi, Atharva Ankolekar, Kumar Kushagra (WK), Sushant Mishra, Vidyadhar Patil

Before the World Cup, Team India will play a 3-match series against South Africa. And also will take part in quadrangular series featuring South Africa, New Zealand and Zimbabwe. For those two series, they also announced the same squad, just adding one more player in the form of CLT Rakshan. In the World Cup, India will start their campaign against Sri Lanka at Bloemfontein on 19th Jan.
