Bangladesh U-19 starlet Shoriful Islam has openly admitted to the quarreling after the World Cup final match as a way to get back at fierce rivals India; to ‘let them know how it feels’ to celebrate in front of someone’s face. The youngster also claimed that ahead of the final, probable revenge was also on the minds of the Bangladeshi players.
India and Bangladesh have shared their moments of rivalry both on and outside the cricket pitch. Prior to what was the eventual champions’ maiden appearance in the U-19 World Cup final, the young Tigers were beaten by the same opposition in the Asia Cup back in 2018 and 2019. They rose to the occasion when it mattered, lifting the coveted trophy in a rain-hit fixture.
Islam, who starred with 2-31 from his 10 overs, hardly shied away from expressing his emotions on the ugly tussle that broke free after the game. Speaking to the Daily Star, he affirmed:
“Actually, we lost two close matches against them in the past. One was the Asia Cup semifinal [in 2018] and the other was a [Asia Cup] final [in 2019]. I can’t describe what those defeats felt like. Before taking the field for the final, all I could think about was what they did after winning and how we felt after losing. They celebrated wildly in front of us back then and we couldn’t say anything. We were waiting for the day we would meet them in a final again.”
The pacer, who accused the Boys in Blue of explicitly celebrating right in front of his team’s batsmen, further added that revenge was well on the cards, stating:
“Yes. We got the chance. What I wanted was to give it our all. Then they would know what it is like when someone celebrates in front of you like that after you’ve lost.”
Two Indian players and three Bangladeshi players have been sanctioned with demerit points for their nasty behavior after the game.
